Chester, IL – Age 87

Arthur R. Schirmer, lovingly known as “Poppy” to family and friends, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, in Chester, Illinois, at the age of 87.

Born on December 8, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri, Arthur was the son of the late Helen Weick and Arthur Schirmer. He is preceded in death by many beloved family members and friends, whose memories he cherished throughout his life.

Arthur is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Schirmer of Chester, IL, and his six children: Suzanne Schirmer of Chester, IL; Samantha (Paul) Helm of Monroe, NC; Cynthia (Jim) Becker of Sarasota, FL; Kelli (Michael) Schwab of Fenton, MI; Lena (Mark) Henley of MO; and Steven (Terri) Schirmer of Burton, MI. He was a proud grandfather to 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Arthur also leaves behind his sister, Rose Marie Woods of VA; his brother, Norman Schirmer of Chester, IL; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A skilled plumber by trade, Arthur was a dedicated member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 562 for 38 years. He took great pride in his work and could build or fix anything he put his mind to. When he wasn’t working with his hands, Arthur enjoyed the peaceful rhythm of fishing and the satisfaction of woodworking.

Raised in the Catholic faith, Arthur lived his life with strong values and a deep love for his family. To those who knew him, “Poppy” was more than a nickname — it was a role he filled with joy, warmth, and laughter. He had a gift for storytelling, and many cherished moments were spent around the table with a mug of his signature cream-and-sugar coffee, sharing tales that often ended in laughter and happy tears.

A celebration of Arthur’s life will be held on Friday, June 27, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at his home:
1520 Swanwick Street, Chester, IL 62233.

Arthur’s legacy of love, laughter, and craftsmanship lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
